Geographically the heartland is spread out all over Singapore, but in its representations it is a space that denotes national and local identity beyond coordinates. It is an exclusionary space. Eventually the tree is pruned, not felled because of the girl’s protest; still, it is incapacitated by the pruning, shorn of its branches and leaves. As if to remind itself of what is possible, the tree tells the story of an older tree’s triumph and regeneration, of how it survived the severing from its roots. The miraculous survival of the rootless tree and the other tree’s threat of being felled for development bring myth and reality together, painting a picture of how the first compensates for the powerlessness that conditions the second.
