41 And yet in both Mee Pok Man and 12 Storeys Khoo shows characters who are curiously as displaced from Singaporean society as they are impossible to place outside of it. In Mee Pok Man necrophilic acts take place in a one-room flat with frames showing a typical HDB landscape. In 12 Storeys a young man jumps off his block of flats and his ghost follows an obese woman, a resident in the same block, silently around. The films seek to provide an alternative perspective of Singapore, alternative to that found in the official discourse of Singapore’s success story.

26 ᮀ Of Trees and the Heartland ᭿ The heartland implies by its name that it is the core of Singapore. Geographically the heartland is spread out all over Singapore, but in its representations it is a space that denotes national and local identity beyond coordinates. It is an exclusionary space. Like the old tree in Changi that was felled, it is part of a myth of origins, of a belief that history and landscape that are exclusively Singaporean exist. 48 They are also narratives of how the “native” or the local is a vexed notion – that its presence is located in trees as well as in public housing estates says as much.

Eventually the tree is pruned, not felled because of the girl’s protest; still, it is incapacitated by the pruning, shorn of its branches and leaves. As if to remind itself of what is possible, the tree tells the story of an older tree’s triumph and regeneration, of how it survived the severing from its roots. The miraculous survival of the rootless tree and the other tree’s threat of being felled for development bring myth and reality together, painting a picture of how the first compensates for the powerlessness that conditions the second.
